Due to its focus on core markets, MTN Group Ltd. may divest some of its smaller operations in West Africa. Nigeria and Ghana, MTN's largest markets in West Africa, are not included in the review of Africa's largest mobile phone company's portfolio in the region.

Also, deliberations are in the early stages, and there’s no certainty they’ll result in divestments. A spokesperson for MTN said the company would communicate any firm intentions to dispose of assets publicly to its stakeholders, declining to comment further. Johannesburg-based MTN, which has a presence in West African countries including Benin, Guinea and Liberia, has been narrowing its focus on its home continent and beyond since 2020.

Earlier this month, it sold its Afghanistan business for $35 million to Beirut-based M1 New Ventures as part of its plan to target more high-growth areas such as mobile money and data sales.
