Joining South Africa’s MTN and Kuwait’s Zain in South Sudan’s telecom market is the newly-launched Digitel Network, the first domestically-owned telecom operation in the country. Its inauguration ceremony was led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit with the aim to bring mobile connectivity to remote areas across the country.

The ICT Authority (ICTA) in Kenya has initiated setting a 630 km fibre-optic cable to deliver internet to under-served areas of northwest of the country. The new cable is being funded jointly by the government and the World Bank under the East Africa Regional Transport, Trade and Development Facilitation Program (EARTTDFP).

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) brought together national broadcasters and regulators from across Africa and its neighbouring countries to coordinate their spectrum use and identify new frequencies to avoid harmful interference as services expand.  A series of key regional frequency planning and coordination meetings, aimed at helping African countries expand the reach of their FM (frequency modulation) radio broadcasting services.

Following the Senate investigative hearing which gave the Fifth Generation (5G) technology a clean bill of health, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a major proactive regulatory step by inaugurating a committee to develop the Information Memorandum (IM) for the auction of 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band which will be used for early deployment of 5G services in the country.
