Ethio telecom Unveils Second High-Speed EV Charging Station in Addis Ababa

Ethio telecom

Ethio telecom has unveiled its second ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging station, continuing its commitment to Ethiopia’s green transition and EV infrastructure. Located on the Bole-Megenagna Road in Addis Ababa, the new station provides cutting-edge charging solutions for the growing number of electric vehicles in the city.

Featuring three charging modalities, the station can simultaneously charge up to 32 electric vehicles, ensuring convenience and efficiency for drivers. These chargers are designed to meet the increasing demand for efficient, fast, and smart EV charging, enhancing the driving experience for electric vehicle owners in Ethiopia.

A Key Milestone in Ethiopia’s EV Future

Ethio telecom’s move aligns with Ethiopia’s broader sustainability goals, marking a significant step in the country’s electric vehicle ecosystem. The company had previously launched a similar charging station along the Bole-Megenagna Road.

The newly opened station is equipped with both ultra-fast chargers (up to 600 kW) and super-fast chargers (up to 500 kW), making it capable of fully charging a vehicle in as little as 15 minutes. This ensures minimal downtime for drivers, particularly for public transport vehicles such as city buses, enabling them to quickly resume their routes. The chargers are efficiently designed and are capable of replenishing batteries at a rate equivalent to traveling 1 km per second, depending on the vehicle’s capabilities.

The station uses artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize charging efficiency by tailoring the power delivered to each vehicle’s battery requirements. This smart charging approach ensures that vehicles are charged more quickly, while wasting less energy.

Additionally, the station boasts a seamless, cashless payment system powered by Ethio telecom’s telebirr digital payment platform. Moreover, the telebirr SuperApp ensures smart online monitoring, making real-time tracking and efficient management possible through fast and reliable fiber, 4G, or 5G connectivity.

Aligning with Ethiopia’s green economy transformation, Ethio telecom’s ultra-fast charging supports the country’s shift to sustainable transportation. As the adoption of electric vehicles rises, the station also helps position Ethiopia as a leader in Africa’s electric mobility sector.

By providing a scalable, future-proof infrastructure solution, Ethio telecom is helping shape a more sustainable and digitally advanced Ethiopia.
