MTN Zambia, together with Huawei, launched the country's first 5G network, making the operator Zambia's first 5G service provider, thus paving the way for the new ear of mobile network in the country. This step promises significant technological improvements that will enhance faster connectivity speed, ultra – low latency and greater bandwidth.

Witnessing the occasion was the minister of technology and science, Honorable Felix Mutati. Commenting on the occasion, he said, “Zambia now joins the first 10 African countries to launch 5G.” The Minister explained that the launch speaks to his ministry’s key pillar of digital transformation through developing digital infrastructure.” In addition, the minister praised Huawei for the technical support towards the project, adding that Huawei’s technology brings endless opportunities.

5G cellular networks are at least 10 times faster than 4G which creates never-before-seen opportunities for people and businesses in Zambia. 5G technology can connect virtually everyone and everything, including machines, objects, and devices.

According to MTN Zambia, they “are moving into an era of ubiquitous connectivity and as MTN Zambia we will be rolling out 5G pilot demonstration sites in Lusaka and Copperbelt Provinces and we are eager to set up specific and relevant use cases together with our Zambian customers and partners to expand social and commercial horizons, alongside the rest of the world. We recognise the continuous support from ZICTA and our partner Huawei in successfully launching the 5G platform.”

MTN Zambia CEO, Bart Hofker, said 5G is the evolution of technology and it enables new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually to everyone and everything, including machines, objects and devices. According to him, 5G will offer fast connectivity, ultra-low latency, and greater benefits, resulting in a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future.

Hofker also thanked the Government for making 5G pilot a priority and making it as part of its 100 days promise. He also applauded Huawei for offering its technical support and always being on board to ensure that the project comes to fruition.

Huawei’s vice president for Southern Africa region, Phil Li, said 5G is bringing more opportunities and it is part of Huawei’s vision to bring connectivity to every place, home and organization. Li explained that the cooperation with MTN launched the first 4G network, followed by the 4.5G network in 2016. He predicted that the next 5 years will be the 5G period and more will be accomplished with the support from the Zambian government and ZICTA.
